Tree planting & establishment

Plan for the mature tree as well as planting day. Discuss the location, growing space and ongoing care before selecting a species.

What to document before the visit

• Describe the intended shade, screening or landscape goal.
• Note nearby structures, overhead lines and access constraints.
• Identify who will provide establishment care.

Understand the proposed scope

Ask the provider to explain species suitability, mature size and site preparation. The NYSDEC planting resource encourages matching the tree to the site. Include utility-location coordination before excavation, delivery, planting and follow-up care in the scope. Check responsibility for planting near public space and obtain any needed permissions before work begins.

Questions worth asking

• Why does this species fit the available growing space?
• Who coordinates utility marking and any permissions?
• What care instructions and replacement terms are included?
