Start with the reason you are seeking advice: a change in the tree, planned construction, clearance or a concern about nearby property. An assessment should explain options before committing to cutting.

What to document before the visit

• Describe the tree’s location and nearby buildings or utilities.
• Take photos from the ground without approaching hanging limbs.
• Clarify ownership when the tree is near a boundary or public street.

Understand the proposed scope

Ask who will assess the tree and how their findings will be documented. Compare retention, pruning and removal only after the provider explains the situation. Written scope should identify the specific tree and any access or protection measures.

Questions worth asking
