Heat pump project planning
Compare a heat-pump proposal as a whole-home comfort project. The equipment choice should fit the building, distribution system and intended use.
What to document before the visit
- Describe current heating and cooling equipment.
- List rooms with comfort problems and any planned renovations.
- Record questions about outdoor equipment placement and controls.
Understand the proposed scope
Ask how the contractor assesses heating and cooling requirements rather than selecting only by the old equipment size. Include electrical coordination, ducts or indoor units, controls and commissioning in the proposal. Clarify how the proposed system is intended to operate in colder weather and whether other heat sources remain. Consult the DOE heat-pump resource for background.
